Wen Gao received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in computer science from Harbin University of Science and Technology and Harbin Institute of Technology, China, in 1982 and 1985 respectively, and received his Ph.D. degrees in computer science from Harbin Institute of Technology, China and in electronics engineering from the University of Tokyo, Japan, in 1988 and 1991 respectively. He joined the faculty of the Harbin Institute of Technology since 1985, appointed as lecturer, professor, chairman of department of computer science from 1985 to 1995. He joined with Chinese Academy of Sciences from 1996 to 2005, appointed as professor, chief scientist, managing director of Institute of Computing Technology from 1996 to 2000, professor and vice president of University of Science and Technology China from 2000 to 2003, professor and executive vice president of Graduate School of Chinese Academy of Sciences from 2000 to 2004. He is joining with Peking University as Professor in School of EE and CS since 2006.
Dr. Gao has published four books and over 400 technical articles in refereed journals and proceedings in the areas of multimedia, image and video compression, face recognition, sign language recognition and synthesis, image retrieval, and multimodal interface. He has earned four secondary national awards of science and technology achievement in 2000, 2002, 2003, and 2005.
Dr. Gao was visiting scientist in the Robotics Institute, Carnegie Mellon University, in 1993, visiting scientist in the MIT AI Lab. in 1995, honorary professor in department of computer science, City University of Hong Kong from 1995 to 1997. He is adjunct professor in University of Science and Technology Hong Kong, from 2004. He severed as the vice chairman of Chinese Association of Image and Graphics, the vice chairman of Chinese Association of Software Industry, the editor for several journals such as the editor-in-chief of Journal of Computer (in Chinese), associate editor of IEEE Trans. on Circuit System for Video Technology, associate editor of IEEE Trans. on Multimedia, and editor of Journal of Visual Communication and Image Representation.
Dr. Gao is active in national and international academic activities. He served as the chairman of steering committee for intelligent computing system in 863 Hi-Tech programme from 1996 to 2001, the Head of Chinese Delegation to the Moving Picture Expert Group (MPEG) of International Standard Organization (ISO) since 1997.
Dr. Gao is currently the Chairman of Audio Video coding Standard (AVS) working group in China. AVS video part has approved as the national standard GB/T 20090.2 in March 2006. Dr. Gao’s has been featured by IEEE Spectrum in June 2005 as one of the “Ten To Watch” among China’s leading technologists for his leadership role in AVS.
